CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 17, 2024) – All fixed seats in American Legion Memorial Stadium will be filled with cheering fans as the brand-new USL Super League – the new women’s professional soccer league – introduces Charlotte’s own Carolina Ascent FC to our city today at 7:00 p.m. at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
This will not be a typical evening in Charlotte, NC. It’s a celebration of one of the most talented and skilled sports teams across the globe, especially given the stunning popularity of women’s sports around the world.
In addition to the soccer match, those in attendance on the 17th will be part of a truly historic event with the introduction at halftime of eleven members of the 1984 Dallas Sting Women’s Soccer Team which went on to become U.S. National Champions (the first ever in both men’s and women’s soccer) and subsequently changed the game of soccer forever. Carolina Ascent majority owner, Dan DiMicco, calls it “The Miracle on the Pitch.” DiMicco, the former President and CEO of NUCOR is a strong advocate for women in sports. He is often heard rounding up support for the Carolina Ascent and the USL Super League. He has played a key role in promoting the new league and will proudly be front-and-center for this particular event.
It’s another “Charlotte First and Historic Moment” and another way for sports fans to join
together to enjoy excellence in athletics and cheer wildly for our home team. Tonight’s game will have the largest attendance of any professional women’s soccer team home opener in N.C. history! It’s also all about family fun. Tim Schuldt, COO of the Carolina Ascent sees the arrival of women’s professional soccer in Charlotte as a way to develop successful learning tools in kids and young adults. “It’s a healthy environment which builds leadership skills and enhances the ethics of working together to achieve common goals,” he said. “It’s also an invigorating and exciting sport to enjoy in person.”
In addition to the game itself on Saturday, Independence Park ~ adjoining American Legion Memorial Stadium ~ will be filled with entertainment and fun for all, beginning at 3:00 and lasting until the doors open to the public for the first Carolina Ascent game at 5:30pm.
“We’re a new and exciting addition to the sporting culture in Charlotte and we thank all the sponsors, fans and soccer academies that made this possible! Our goal is to provide quality entertainment and give supporters the reason to keep coming back for more.” said Managing Partner & CEO Jim McPhilliamy. “Let’s fill the stadium to the brim for every one of those games. Let’s set the record for MOST SELLOUTS!”
Carolina Ascent’s next home game is on Sunday, 25 August at 2:30 p.m. Fans should purchase their tickets NOW to be sure to gain admission. It’s highly possible that the Sunday, 25 August game will be another sellout. Let’s make it happen, Charlotte!
